Wednesday’s Whim: Dancing

Our Executive Director Beth traditionally authors the monthly Wednesday’s Whim. While she’s on maternity leave, we’ll be hearing from different staff and board members. Today’s Whim comes from Resident Staff Intern, Sierra.

Some of my most favorite things about camp are folk dancing and “celebrations.” (Celebrations are when the staff shares something worth celebrating with the community. It may be a funny story, something special they noticed on a hike, or simply “Tomorrow’s my birthday!”)

What I love most about these activities is that they aren’t strictly time-classified to meetings or special gatherings, they can happen sporadically while doing dishes or during some downtime. Celebrating the good bits of our lives together and sharing in one another’s happiness bonds us as a staff and Camp Stevens community.

It’s activities like these that I hope to carry with me if I ever venture out of the world of camping, because I believe the basis of celebrations and folk dancing is gratitude. Gratitude is core here at Camp Stevens and it’s evident everywhere, especially when watching a group of people dance to Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration,” or hearing someone share their joy in seeing daffodils, taking in the view of Volcan Mountain, or passing warm, homemade bread around the dinner table.

What has you celebrating or dancing in gratitude?

Whim: “sudden idea.” This monthly post promises a number of things: personal thoughts and reflections, showing off Camp Stevens’ programs and staff, announcements for upcoming opportunities, and answering questions or responding to comments “from the audience.” If you have a topic or question you’d like addressed, just e-mail Beth!
