Here’s a First Time story from Food Services Director Susan McMillion:
I drove up from the desert, unannounced, the night before my interview, after having camped the night before. I wanted to be on time for my 8AM interview. A cheery girl named Eva greeted me in the parking lot and quickly set me up at St. Mary’s cabin, now a memory after the Angel fire. Sometimes I park my Prius in the spot where I slept that first night.
The silence was a deafening roar of mid-October frogs and crickets, and the sky was shot with spots of light. In the morning, I met with Stuart and John, and Peter. Each walked me around camp and asked me friendly questions. When I drove off later that morning, it was with the unwavering and deep certainty that I belonged there. It was just a matter of time until they came to that realization. I am in my 10th year here and still love it daily.
2012 marks the 60th year of Camp Stevens. Over the next few weeks – leading up to our September 2nd Open House celebration – we’ll be sharing people’s reflections on their first times at Camp Stevens. Share your story by emailing ashleyATcampstevensDOTorg.
