Here’s a First Time story from resident summer staff member David Vissers:
My first time at Camp Stevens was in 2002. I was 9 years old and I was extremely nervous. The camp had had to be evacuated the week before due to the fires that were going on very close to Julian and raging in Cuyamaca. I remember getting on the bus and thinking “What have I got myself into?”. When we arrived at camp I saw the smoke on Mt. Volcan and became even more nervous, but after meeting my counselor, going to my cabin and being welcomed into the group, I completely forgot about all of that. My triad gave me the best week I had all summer and I made tons of friends. The dedication of the counselors and my staffer to my well-being and trying to give me the best week of my summer made me want to come back and enjoy even more summers. I’ve been coming back ever since.
2012 marks the 60th year of Camp Stevens. Over the next few weeks – leading up to our September 2nd Open House celebration – we’ll be sharing people’s reflections on their first times at Camp Stevens. Share your story by emailing ashleyATcampstevensDOTorg.
