From skits to weekend staff outings, we do a lot of creative processing here at Camp Stevens. But none is more important than when our staff comes up with the upcoming summer camp session’s theme.
First, we develop goals: What are we trying to accomplish next week? What do we want to get the kids excited about? What are we, the staff, excited about already? Then, the fun happens: Brainstorming. From 15 word concepts, to a simple exclamation, themes can range from the direct (“From the Songbook”) to the abstract (“When Magic Blooms”). Once the staff has consensus on the theme (always consensus, never voting!), it’s up to each individual staff person with his/her triad (the two cabin counselors they’re working with) to take the theme and make it their own, for their own group goals and age of kids.
This week, with a theme of A New Mountain we have groups named:
- Anmanpan’s New Baking Team
- Giant Lumberjack Bats
- Undercover Forest Collective
- Bang Bangiteez
- Crest Crevice Crow
- Rock Phoenix Keepers
Ah, to be a fly on the wall during the creative processes that got those names!
